How does CBD work

Pain is sadly something that most of us will experience in our lives. From toothache, headaches and muscle pain, to more long term conditions like Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. There are many different types of pain, but also lots of different treatments. In this article, we want to take a high-level overview of how we can manage some of these different types of pain.

Types of pain

Pain generally falls into a few categories, people often talk about acute and chronic pain. Acute pain is something that has a really quick onset, so for example if you break your leg or pull a muscle. This sort of pain is the one that makes you shout out, just think about what happens if you stub your toe. That’s acute pain!

The other type of pain is chronic pain. This type of pain is the one that is long term and would be seen in conditions like fibromyalgia or osteoarthritis. People who have this pain may often live with it on a daily basis. So much so that they can become tolerant of a certain level of pain in their lives.

Both chronic and acute pain causes some mental anguish. Many people with long term pain report it makes them feel depressed or anxious. This can make it difficult to sometimes get an accurate diagnosis for certain conditions.

Prescription drug treatments for pain

There are many different types of painkillers that you can take for pain. Depending on what sort of pain you have, will determine the choice of painkillers that you may want to look at using.

Some pain killers which contain Ibruprofen are better for muscular pains, such as period pain or pulled muscles. These are known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They’re often referred to as NSAID drugs. These sorts of painkillers come with their own drawbacks.

For example, some asthmatics are not able to take these. Others may have stomach issues if they take them. They’re also available in gel form which can be rubbed into the area where you have the pain.

The other common type of painkillers is the ones that cover things such as codeine and the stronger opiates. These painkillers are usually used for more long-term pain. They do however tend to cause sickness and in some cases can make you really drowsy. The main issue with the opiate family of drugs is that people taking the stronger opiates such as Morphine and Tramadol can become addicted to them.

Taking any painkiller comes with a risk, so we would always recommend that you discuss it with your doctor. Even if you’re looking at taking what seems to be quite mild painkillers.

Alternative treatments for pain

There are other treatments available for pain if you’re someone who doesn’t want to take painkillers. We know there are a lot of you out there. There are so many different options now which are reported to work well, that there is something for everyone.

Some people with conditions such as fibromyalgia, sports injuries and other types of pain swear by acupuncture. This traditional Chinese medicine is now widely accepted as a good method of pain relief. So much so that the NHS now offer this as a therapy. Tiny needles are inserted into various specific points on the body. After a few sessions, many people report an improvement in their pain levels.

Another non-drug pain treatment that people often use for back and neck pain is working with a chiropractor. Many people have had effective treatment, especially for lower back pain. This has had a bit of a bad reputation in the past, but many health professionals are starting to understand the benefits to certain patients.

Exercise such as yoga and pilates have often been associated with pain relief too. These gentle forms of exercise are generally good at giving you pain relief, depending on your condition. Both yoga and pilates can help to balance the body, which in turn can put less pressure on joints for example in your back. Some people also say that swimming has been really beneficial. Again, there is something for everyone. But it is always worth checking with your doctor about what would be recommended for your specific condition.

One other therapy which has been used for pain relief is cognitive behavioural therapy. Many people who have pain also have stress because they are living with long term pain. By tackling the stress, people often find that they are more relaxed, which in turn helps with diminishing pain. As with the painkillers, we’d always recommend that you speak to your doctor before you start using any alternative treatments for pain management.
